NOIRVEMBER: THE MALTESE FALCON with Special Introduction by Matias Bombal. The first in our NOIRVEMBER series at the Onyx Downtown at the Nevada Theatre is the sterling adaptation of Dashiell Hammett’s novel of the same name, a movie that popularized the film noir genre in Hollywood and launched the careers of star Humphrey Bogart and director John Huston. Bogart plays Sam Spade, a private investigator who is quickly thrown into a deadly web of murder when his partner is killed in cold blood on a case gone wrong. The twists come quickly after that, as Spade seeks to discover the truth while butting heads with the mysterious Kasper Gutman (Sydney Greenstreet in his debut film role) and his sniveling associate Joel Cairo (played to perfection by Peter Lorre, as always). Matías Bombal, famed film historian and host of Matías Bombal’s Hollywood, will be on hand to provide historical context, fascinating tidbits, and valuable insight on the film in a special introduction.
