C.A.T.S. presents Rashomon
April 23rd – May 16th
Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra (CATS) presents Rashomon, which explores the notions of truth and justice – a “who done it?” in medieval Japan — challenging perceptions of eye witnesses.
Based on stories written by Ryunosuke Akutagawa in 1915, Rashomon became an Akira Kurosawa film in 1950, and it had been hailed as one of his finest, starring Toshirô Mifune. The play’s Broadway premiere in 1959 (starring Rod Steiger and Claire Bloom), written by Michael Kanin and Fay Kanin, received rave reviews and was nominated for three Tony awards. The CATS production is directed by Sonny Alforque.
There are sword fights, rain on stage, taiko percussion, and more, transporting the audience to 12th century Heian-era Kyoto.
Due to the themes of murder and assault, the play is recommended for ages 14+.
