In February 1909, the Chrystal Theater (Nevada City’s first cinema, which was located on Commercial Street) closed after only 11 months of operation and the chairs were moved to the Nevada Theatre. Films were shown along with theatrical attractions. Later that year the manager of the Nevada Theatre, W. J. Gribben, sold his interest in the Nevada Theatre and sold his interest in motion pictures to the Broadway group, owners of the Broadway movie house down the street (which was located across from the National Hotel). Gribben then moved away.
