25th anniversary of her solo winter crossing Reinette Senum returns with her inspiring one-woman show, Alaska Revisited. Humorous and animated in its telling, Alaska Revisited is the true story of a young woman whose search for answers about her family roots leads her into the Alaskan wilderness in 1994. Traveling over 1,500 miles alone and hauling a 160 lb sled this 27 year old self-made pioneer finds joy and indescribable strength as she struggles with the unforgiving elements.

The action unfolding on stage features stories of Africa’s Nana Asma’u, Europe’s Margaret Fuller, and America’s earliest suffragettes in a synchronized tale of mid-19th century efforts toward emancipation and human rights work. Their stories parallel the plight of Tahirih, the celebrated poet who arose as the first feminist of the Middle East. Through drama, music and dance, the show celebrates the efforts of women who advanced equality and sacrificed for the common good almost 200 years ago, to pave the way for the women of our time.

What will we do? For Lula Wiles, the trio made up of Isa Burke, Eleanor Buckland, and Mali Obomsawin, the question is central to the creation of their music—and it’s the title of their sophomore album, out in 2019 on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings.

Anchoring the band’s sharp, provocative songcraft is a mastery of folk music, and a willingness to subvert its hallowed conventions. They infuse their songs with distinctly modern sounds: pop hooks, distorted electric guitars, and dissonant multi-layered vocals, all employed in the service of songs that reclaim folk music in their own voice.

Rocky Horror Picture Show was the film that launched the Nevada Theatre Film Series back in 1979, and has a cult following virtually unmatched by any other film. What began as a flop when it opened in theaters in 1975 evolved into a phenomenon that happened in movie theaters around the country every Saturday at midnight for decades, and is still going on in some cities today.

For all of you seasoned folk, prop bags are sold in the lobby.

Jonathan Richman has been playing music, recording and touring for most of his life. Jonathan and his drummer Tommy Larkins win fans wherever they play. In the early 1970s, Jonathan formed the noted band The Modern Lovers. Tommy Larkins was in the groups Naked Prey, Giant Sand and other popular bands in Tucson, Arizona.

Molly Fisk was the inaugural Poet Laureate of Nevada County and is now one of 13 Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellows nationwide. Her project — California Fire & Water — is helping Californians write about climate crisis, collecting their poems into a book, and organizing readings from that book all over the state during National Poetry Month (April) 2020. She also writes commentary for KVMR and works as a life coach.  George Schroder sang “You Are My Sunshine” for pennies in a Frisco skid row bar 75 years ago. A natural philospher, ceramist, small farmer and escapee from corporate mess. He’s still singing.

Three solo performers first met in the late 1970s in southern Vermont while performing on the New England folk music circuit. Over the years they’ve performed as duos and trios across the country. In 2008 they spent a week in the mountains of Pennsylvania dusting off their musical partnership and writing songs. That gathering has become an annual event – dubbed “Troubadour Camp” – and has generated a body of work that includes over 60 songs and an undetermined number of stories.

The musical partnership between Alasdair Fraser, long regarded as one of Scotland’s premier fiddle ambassadors, and the sizzlingly-talented young California cellist Natalie Haas may not seem an obvious one.

Fraser, acclaimed by the San Francisco Examiner as “the Michael Jordan of Scottish fiddling,” has a concert and recording career spanning over 40 years, with a long list of awards, accolades, television credits, and feature performances on top movie soundtracks (Last of the Mohicans,Titanic, Stone of Destiny).

Gold Country World Dance Showcase in Nevada County originally had its roots in Middle Eastern Belly Dance and has expanded to include many other styles of dance. This fast paced and fun show, running since 2014, moves rapidly from one act to the next enabling as many performers as possible to entertain and display their art. Audiences are treated to a wide variety of dance styles, music and incredibly colorful costumes.
